The POTENZA Valley Project is a geo-archaeological research project in what were once the 5th and the 6th region of Roman Italy, Picenum and Umbria. This interdisciplinary project was set up to measure the evolution of social complexity in Antiquity within the valley of one of the Marches' major rivers of the modern regio Le Marche, the river Potenza. The project is directed by Frank Vermeulen and is based at the Departments of Archeology and Geography at Ghent University. The main financial support comes from the Research Foundation of Flanders (FWO) and from Ghent University (BOF-funds). Substantial grants were also obtained from the Belgian Federal Government (IUAP V/09 and VI/22).
